The New York Post reports that during a recent meeting of young conservatives in Dallas, Abbott said, “This next session, we will pass a law prohibiting biological men to compete against women in college sports.”Texas already bans transgender competitors in public schools from kindergarten through high school.
That ban happened on Abbott’s watch in 2021Texas lawmakers now want the same ban in universities in the state. Lawmakers filed a bill to prevent trans women from competing against biological women in college sports.
Texas and 17 other states have tried to restrict the participation of transgender people in sports; there have been court challenges to such restrictions.
Texas-born swimmer Lia Thomas was mentioned by Abbott when he spoke during the meeting in Dallas.
Thomas, 22, a well-known U. Penn transgender swimmer, had hormone treatment to lower her testosterone level and fulfilled the requirements of the the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) to swim on the university’s women’s team.
She now attends law school.
Abbot said on the transgender athlete subject, “We’ve fought for the rights of women to be able to succeed in this world only to have that now superseded by this ideology that men are going to be empowered to compete against women.
In Florida, athletes must provide a birth certificate showing their sex at birth before signing up for a sports team, because that state has a law banning those born biologically male from competing on women’s teams.
It has been challenged in court, as any such law passed in Texas will likewise also be challenged.
LGBTQ+ groups have spoken out against Abbott’s proposal.
